Attacks in Mumbai
160 Killed – more than 300 Wounded
In late November 2008, ten terrorists killed at least 160 people and wounded more than 300 in a three-day armed assault covering multiple locations in the city including two tourist hotels and a restaurant, railway station, hospital, and Jewish center. These attacks were preceded by at least three and a half years of extensive planning, reconnaissance, covert acquisition of a vast array of logistics, the forward positioning of weapons and ammunition, and intense training.
The lone captured assailant, Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab, revealed that he and the other members of the assault team were briefed in extensive detail with imagery that had been obtained by a separate surveillance team, who had also selected the targets of the attack. The surveillance work was so detailed and effective that the ten-man attack team had never even visited the city prior to the day of the attack; yet they 'knew' their targets better than the local police and the national security forces.
